Web2.0pen/ Web2.Expo - Come to my discussion group, even if you aren't in SF :-)

I am leading a discussion today at web2.0pen down at the web2.0 Expo ... at the Moscone Center. The discussion is at 3pm, talking about online communities & how they interact with the digital music space. Chris Pirillo (lockergnome, gnomedex, and much much more) is down at the conference today with a live stream of his experience. Perhaps he will attend my discussion group so my awesome friends back east can catch a glimpse. I've embedded his stream so you can see for yourself. My discussion is at 3pm Pacific Time - east coast that's 6pm your time, bitches.

You're all I read anymore

I love you sons of bitches. You’re all I read any more. You're the only ones who’ll talk all about the really terrific changes going on, the only ones crazy enough to know that life is a space voyage, and not a short one, either, but one that’ll last for billions of years. You’re the only ones with guts enough to really care about the future, who really notice what machines do to us, what wars do to us, what cities do to us, what big, simple ideas do to us, what tremendous misunderstanding, mistakes, accidents, catastrophes do to us. You're the only ones zany enough to agonize over time and distance without limit, over mysteries that will never die, over the fact that we are right now determining whether the space voyage for the next billion years or so is going to be Heaven or Hell.

Bumrush the Charts - march 22

Today is March 22, which means for .99 and 2 mins of your time you can help new media prove purchasing power AND help someone go to college all at once. I've already purchased the track today. I am in. Please Join me, cc chapman, adam curry, and other new media makers and advocates - participate in Bumrushing the iTunes charts. To save a step, you can purchase the track straight from my blog right here, and the financial aid folks will still donate 50% of your purchase to edvisors.com (scholarship fund).

    band: Black Lab
Track to buy in itunes: Mine Again
make life easy and click here to buy it (you will be counted in Bumrush the charts)

for more info visit the Bumrush The Charts blog.

"On March 22, 2007, a bunch of podcasters are aiming to game the charts in the iTunes Music Store for at least a day by asking everyone involved in podcasting to buy just one song, a specific song, Mine Again by Black Lab, that day. The effort, called Bum Rush the Charts, is designed to demonstrate to old media that podcasting has reach and more importantly, purchasing power."

    flames. no burns.

well i've been involved in my first flame war since 1997 and i have to say i feel rather unscathed. you see, in between flame emails, i was busting my ass to get more publicity for a really really good cause which involves the advancement of social media and, of course, podcasting. you may have heard about it on billboard or even the podcast network...

The Financial Aid Podcast will bum rush the charts and raise scholarship funding all at once. On March 22, New Media Makers from around the world are being asked to promote and purchase one single track from itunes to prove that an alternative media campaign can chart a track on itunes. Please read more details here ...and stay tuned. The bum rush is thursday. the band is Black Lab. The buy links will go up on thursday at midnight.

flame it or fuel it, the choice is yours.

    Jean Baudrillard, RIP

Jean Baudrillard, postmodern French philosopher and cultural theorist died on March 6th 2007. Baudrillard is the reason for Not Shocking's existence as documented in post number 1 (which handled Baudrillard's take on 9/11). Yes, it was Jean Baudrillard who penned simulacra and simulation. If you recall The Matrix, neo keeps his pirated disks in his Simulacra and Simulation book.

    and so do i.

Actual Cactus and Pickle to Duel at IODA SxSW Party

So if you don't already know about it, The big 3rd Annual IODA SxSW bash (with the black angels headlining oh yes yes yes) is on March 14 at emo's annex from 1-6pm, NO wristbands or badges are needed, but there will be VIP wristies and if you read my blog and attend i MIGHT give you one. if you want one, just whisper not shocking in one of my ears and i'll slap something special on your wrist. Moving right along....

I am leaving for Austin within hours and am pulling an all nighter to wrap up every loose end or at least prepare some other ends for wrapping. It's "that time of year again" where the internet, indie film world and music industry invade austin. I always make rude comments about those annoying "keep austin weird" shirts so i'll try not to do that in this very blog entry. too late i guess.

And what about the cactus and the pickle duel? Well. It's not as historic as Alexander Pushkin's gruelling duel, but a duel there shall be.

many of us have had our pic taken with the pickle, and the whole phenomenon started last year at SxSW '06. My friend Kris Krug and many others have flickr documentation of our cherished act of pickle hugging & smooching. the pickle even made it to the IODA SxSW Opening Day bash in '06, where he was seen cajoling none other than Dave Mansueto from Liberated Syndication.

This is the infamous pickle and me, at the Podcast & Portable Media expo in Ontario, CA, September_something 2006.

Indeed, our friend PDilly, the podcast pickle, will be at our IODA party again this year.

    but wait. there is more.

This is the Spot DJ Cactus.

And this is the Spot DJ Cactus challenging the the Podcast Pickle. Both are attending the IODA affair, and at least one of them has something to say about it:

i have a feeling the duel itself may or may not take place before apostle of hustle hop on stage which is at 4:20 pm ...on march 14. at emos annex. corner 6th and red river.

    coast 2 coast

everything just rumbled. i knew it was an earthquake, my first instinct was to stand and survey surroundings. this one was a little shakier than the last - 4.4 and it showed. nothing fell off the shelves, the cats stared at the ceiling.

    NotShocking003: Mission Control

Still today, I cannot cross the threshold of a teaching institution without physical symptoms, in my chest and my stomach, of discomfort or anxiety.

And yet I have never left school.
