Last night, as i was 4 8 15 16 23 42'ing (watching the only television program i actually watch on an actual tv set) there were shots fired about a block away. i heard either 6 or 7 shots, couldn't count. My roommate and i looked at each other. "that was a gunshot, right?" Right.

LOST cut to commercial as if it knew, and we heard the sound of a car pulling off, barely screeching but hauling ass. 3 minutes later: the cops arrived, i lost track of the tv show, we turned off our lights and peered out the windows to watch for what would happen next. Men yelling, a woman screamed, police sirens and lights, and yellow tape around the convenient store on the corner.

Pause. go back in time. 20 minutes before the tv programme began, i went to the convenient store to use the ATM. I bought a red lighter, walked home.

Pause. Back to the crime scene.

We watched as police interviewed men and women, one man collapsed in tears, another woman fell to her knees and two men tried to pick her up. There were the sounds of humans in pain, sadness, tears and shock echoing down the street. My roommates and i started speculating.

"maybe the convenient store clerk was shot"
"the one who just sold me a lighter? the nice middle eastern guy who has pictures of his daughter all over the place?"
"yeah"

I've been scouring the interwebs for information on a crime in the mission last night at a convenient store and have yet to find any piece of information. (if any missionites have any good links to local crime stories let me know)
what i do know is that Someone died on my block last night at the convenient store. one minute they were alive. Shots fired. then they were not. and instantly, my concerns and any problems, all in perspective. And i have risen on May 3, 2007 with new responsibility to embrace the day and days ahead. dumb luck.

well i've been involved in my first flame war since 1997 and i have to say i feel rather unscathed. you see, in between flame emails, i was busting my ass to get more publicity for a really really good cause which involves the advancement of social media and, of course, podcasting. you may have heard about it on billboard or even the podcast network...

The Financial Aid Podcast will bum rush the charts and raise scholarship funding all at once. On March 22, New Media Makers from around the world are being asked to promote and purchase one single track from itunes to prove that an alternative media campaign can chart a track on itunes. Actual Cactus and Pickle to Duel at IODA SxSW Party

So if you don't already know about it, The big 3rd Annual IODA SxSW bash (with the black angels headlining oh yes yes yes) is on March 14 at emo's annex from 1-6pm, NO wristbands or badges are needed, but there will be VIP wristies and if you read my blog and attend i MIGHT give you one. if you want one, just whisper not shocking in one of my ears and i'll slap something special on your wrist. Moving right along....

I am leaving for Austin within hours and am pulling an all nighter to wrap up every loose end or at least prepare some other ends for wrapping. It's "that time of year again" where the internet, indie film world and music industry invade austin. I always make rude comments about those annoying "keep austin weird" shirts so i'll try not to do that in this very blog entry. too late i guess.

And what about the cactus and the pickle duel? Well. It's not as historic as Alexander Pushkin's gruelling duel, but a duel there shall be.

many of us have had our pic taken with the pickle, and the whole phenomenon started last year at SxSW '06. My friend Kris Krug and many others have flickr documentation of our cherished act of pickle hugging & smooching. the pickle even made it to the IODA SxSW Opening Day bash in '06, where he was seen cajoling none other than Dave Mansueto from Liberated Syndication.

This is the infamous pickle and me, at the Podcast & Portable Media expo in Ontario, CA, September_something 2006.

Indeed, our friend PDilly, the podcast pickle, will be at our IODA party again this year.

The SF Podcast Meetup has been meeting once a month for close to two years, and this thursday we are convening in a new environment for the first time in over a year. We're on a schedule, because there are bands and djs involved later in the evening, so I'm bringing a bona-fide agenda. Not a web product - we've all got our day jobs - but an agenda. Over 300 members strong, SF Podcast Meetup fuses social interaction with digital media. Our Meetup is a tool to perpetuate the use and enjoyment of digital media. We aren't just podcasters, there are podcast/rss-curious attendees, vloggers, and bloggers who regularly attend, too. After all this time, thanks to Michael Butler, we are clearly a community. The question I am bringing to the group for this month's meetup is...."now what...?" - Now that we've organized, what is next? What are your thoughts on any next steps for the SF Podcast Meetup? we are a diverse group with commmitment. We meet once a month. Some are music podasters, we've got Network Security podcasts, Psychology, Animals, 123 Listen To Me and numerous other shows in attendance. I look fwd to seeing the group with visitors and newbies alike on Thursday.

Black Fiction confirms RELOAD appearance/ Nov 30, 2006

In true web2.2 form, reload, a very grassroots party celebrating 2.0 media nuance and independent san francisco music in one venue, is taking full form. The flyer has changed twice and now for a third time. Like so many Scobleized real time blog posts, RELOAD is taking form in Real Time. Upcoming has yielded a wider base of friends than i once had, and ritual roaster has become my favorite place to dodgeball my friends. Finally a two pronged announcement: BLACK FICTION joins the family AND...Today is the cut off for adding artists. i can't accept anymore bands for Reload. There's only so many hours in the day, and Ritual Roaster is only open until 11pm. So let it be known, that 3 days before Reload, i got the call i was waiting for. Black Fiction, one of the best indie bands in San Francisco, confirmed that they indeed would like to open for Halou at the DNA Lounge this Thursday, Nov 30. the first time i saw Black Fiction, they opened for The Slip. I was there with multiple friends, many from Jambase. And i've been to their shows ever since. A real honor it is to have them play at Reload, even with 3 days to spare. Howie Denis Puts Shoe Leather to Grass Roots

Howie Denis goes door to door

Howard "Call Me Howie" Denis has been hitting the trail for almost 40 years. He first ran for office in 1967, for delegate to a mock constitutional convention. He lost.

This time, he's running to keep his seat on the Montgomery County Council, where he is the lone Republican.

In between: Five dog bites. One gun incident. A win-loss record of 6-5. The emergence and fine-tuning of the "Call Me Howie" Campaign Regimen.

There are folks in this world who love a parade. Denis, 66, loves a campaign. And if he can campaign in a parade? Best of all!

Of course all politicians will say they love the stump: Oh how they love the kissing of babies, the pressing of flesh, the mingling with "real" people.

But judging from the color-coded precinct lists Denis carries in slightly tattered manila folders and the custom arch supports he has fitted into his shoes each campaign season, you get the sense that this guy is the rare politician who really means it. Other politicians may look at their cars and think "transportation." Denis sees opportunity, which is why his silver Chevy Cobalt boasts two American flags flying from the roof and a triangular red and white rooftop sign that proclaims: "Re-Elect Denis" complete with a star to dot the "i."

There he goes up 270, behind the wheel of this un-Montgomery County setup, and other motorists stare, the way they do when they see a clown driving to a children's party.

The ";Call Me Howie" Campaign Regimen has not always been a winning strategy; there was that unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor and the failed tries at the state House of Delegates. Now, in his quest to keeping representing District 1 (Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac and points in between), he's facing a tough challenge from Democrat Roger Berliner. But, says Denis, he understands that if you're going to play the game, you can't be afraid to lose.

Sometimes, he gets the one-fingered salute. Or worse.";I guess I just knocked on the wrong door" is how he perceives why a man once opened his door and waved a gun when the candidate stepped onto his property.

The key, he says, is to start slow. Eighteen months before Election Day, he starts walking precincts. A few here, a few there. Too much walking too soon can result in painful -- really, really painful -- late-night leg cramps. Denis has been there.

About six months before Election Day, he abandons potatoes and bread and embraces the South Beach or Atkins diet. More energy. And less poundage means less strain on his back and feet during those increasingly lengthy precinct walks. This season, he's lost eight pounds.

The way Denis sees it, half the battle is getting people to remember your name, particularly in this election, when the County Council candidates are down near the end of the ballot. That's why he's never been shy about trying something different. He scoffs at those who sniff at his unconventional tactics.

"At this level there's no such thing as too much," he said. "You never reach a saturation point when you're at the bottom of the ticket."

This philosophy is what led to the horse. During his 2000 council campaign, Denis was so concerned that people would forget to vote in the April special election, he contemplated borrowing a horse to ride through town, like a latter-day Paul Revere calling his fellow citizens to action. But Denis, a lawyer and Hill staffer currently on leave, had never been much of an equestrian; as a child, he was thrown from his steed and broke his leg. So his campaign staff balked at the notion, afraid he'd hurt himself again.

To this day, he still thinks it was a great idea and is currently pondering whether to try it this week.

Out on the trail one day last week, Denis pointed out a landmark of campaigns past. That hill, he said, pointing near where the Capital Crescent Trail crosses Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda. That was his favorite billboard spot. Now billboards are banned everywhere in the county. This still irks Denis. "Blight," he harrumphed.

So Denis found another way to get his name out there and, according to state board of elections records, spent about $18,000 to do it.

Taxi tops.

This season, commuters can see Denis grinning in full color on the roofs of 25 cabs cruising Montgomery County streets.

"At night," he pointed out proudly, "they're illuminated."

On precinct walks and during supermarket stops, he is pleasant but brief. The palm cards are stuffed in the left pocket of his sport coat. There's a bright red "Re-elect Denis" sticker on his lapel.

He greets people with a quick introduction and ends with "I'd appreciate your consideration."

Denis can make conversation with anyone. Upon hearing that a pair of potential voters hail from Canada, he presses them before they can scurry away.

"Where in Canada?"he asks.

"Oh, Ottawa,'' he says. "I've always wanted to go to Ottawa."

There's a bit more small talk. The woman's body language changes. She lingers. She takes a palm card.

"Democrat or Republican?"; she asks.

"Republican,"; Denis said.

She hands back the card.

"No. Absolutely not,"she says.

Such is the reality of a campaign trail where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans more than 2 to 1.

But for some, to know Howie is to love Howie.

Robert Mertz had e-mailed his request for a lawn sign. So Denis drives over to the Mertz house in Bethesda. He opens his trunk and pulls out the sign. He knocks at the door. Pamela Mertz answers.

"Robert!" she hollers. ";Howard Denis is here!"

Her husband runs up from the basement. He says, ";I didn't expect I'd get a personal delivery!"

Denis returns to his Cobalt, with the roll-down windows and the Mylar balloon, which looks tired. The interior is crammed with boxes of campaign literature. In between them, there's a small plastic bottle of Brut.

For more formal occasions, Denis has the use of a different car.

A few years ago he persuaded his wife of 20 years, Babette, to buy herself a new car, a Chrysler Sebring convertible. After all, he reasoned, who doesn't love a convertible?

But Denis had another motive.

Saturday, despite the wind and threat of rain, there he was in the back seat of the silver-blue Sebring, Babette at his side, both of them waving. A volunteer was driving, two dogs wearing Denis T-shirts followed, and Denis was happily campaigning in the Potomac Day parade.

Howard A. Denis has survived as the lone Republican on the County Council for six years. With a record of constituent service to rely on, Denis hopes to extend his council tenure for four more years.

Denis, 66, represents council District 1, which includes Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac. His council service began with a special election in 2000, when he was elected to fill out the remaining term of Councilwoman Betty Ann Krahnke when illness forced her to resign. He was re-elected in 2002, and has become known as much for his extensive baseball knowledge and historical quotations, as he has for his stand on issues.

Denis has successfully worked with council colleagues in passing a number of contentious issues, and in some cases devising conciliation plans for both sides. He was instrumental in setting building height rules, proposed an amendment to resolve the Seven Locks and Churchill cluster school construction issues and was a key vote in fast-tracking the county’s smoking ban.

Along the way Denis has garnered the endorsements of most of the county’s civic, education, and labor organizations, including many with little history of Republican endorsements.

If successful in November, Denis’ four-year focus will include maintaining parks and the tree canopy, working with the school system to do away with portable classrooms and establishing closer relationships with nonprofit organizations. He is also lobbying for membership on the council’s Health and Human Services Committee.

Denis faces Democratic challenger and energy lawyer Roger Berliner in the general election. Berliner ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination during the 2000 special election.

Acid King is Lori S., Joey Osbourne, and Guy Pinhas. If you have not had the chance to be blown away by their immense stage presence, their gut wrenching, mind numbing, explosive live sets then chances are you wouldn't notice them walking along side you on your morning trek to work. Heck, you probably wouldn't even noticing them milling around the bar before their set, and that'd be a shame because Acid King is the definition of stoner rock. Not the stoner rock that MTV and Rolling Stone were hyping as the next big thing a few years back. This is bone rattling, ultra low end, fuzzed out, psychedelic, stoner rock. It's the music that large hairy guys who work on the line and drink PBR until four in the morning live and die for.

Formed in January of 1993, Lori S. had a simple idea which she summed up in one line for an ad she put in a local San Francisco paper. The ad simply said, “Seeking Bass and Drums to create a very large and low end sound.” With only one real response Lori had her bassist but it wasn’t until months later that the trio was completed when Lori was at a party and in despearation screamed out "anyone know any drummers?” Dubbed Acid King from satanic stoner, Ricky Kasso after reading about his story in the book "Say You Love Satan" Lori and Co. hit the San Fran club circuit scoring opening slots for some killer shows with the likes of the Melvins, Sleep, Hawkwind and The Obsessed. Sympathy For The Record Industry put out their debut EP and first full length before landing on Kozik’s Man’s Ruin Records for a handful of splits and the original release of the seminally underated “Busse Woods.”

Fast forward to the present day, a mere six months after re-releasing “Busse Woods” on their new home at Small Stone Records, Acid King has returned with an album of epic proportions. Six years in the making Small Stone is proud to present "III." Produced with the help of San Fransico's legendary engineer Billy Anderson, this is the album that Lori and Co. were born to make. Filled with thundering low end and fat ass riffs "III" will redefine the definition of the word heavy for years to come. So prepare for rock and roll destruction and keep your eyes open for the US tour this summer and Europe this fall. "III" is only the beginning.

so I'm in seattle, all hepped up on bumbershoot and carrying my favorite hard cover copy of Palahniuk's Choke (which i plan to get signed at bumbershoot during his panel session) - when it dawned on me that i might be embarking upon a very palahniuk weekend overall. The great irony, of course, is the opportunity to hang with chuck on "labor day weekend" - a sanctioned "holiday" for the worker bees of america. And, on this labor free palahniukian weekend, I'm staying with my friend Marla, who bears the same name as tyler durden's anchor in Palahniuk's more famed novel, Fight Club. It's good to see Marla, her apartment is almost as beautiful as she is - cozy, overlooks the water with an amazing skyline view, nestled on a street full of trees in Seattle's Capitol Hill. Marla is a bit shorter and smaller than me (her showerhead comes to my neck) and runs an amazing legal file sharing site - I'm serious - called Weedshare. Marla is always on the prowl for sites that are Weed friendly. My kind of woman. She may be the only woman other than Mary Hodder who will beat me to the pie-in-the-sky goal of making the cover of Wired. but most importantly, Marla loves to dance. And since it's a very palahniuk weekend, perhaps you will enjoy watching her dip the palm tree while passers by go about their day.

This gem of a video, of Weedshare's Marla is the perfect kick off to bumbering... Tonight it's out to dinner with some folks from Sarathan Records & Marla & John from Weedshare. At the office party/ bbq, i had the pleasant opportunity to hang with cohorts - people with whom i share memories and new faces with whom there is much future. and... the chance to get very very drunk and somehow remain articulate enough to expose my most recent lame idea - reinventing cellular emergency reporting - a more efficient emergency reporting and broadcast system built for the mobile phone era in the digital age, utilizing the tools available for transmitting information via a mobile device which far outweigh the act of a phone call.

with slurred words and distinct inabilities to describe why i like my idea, i spat out the plan to anyone who would listen. Some did, but walked away in minutes, others just looked at me blankly probably wondering why they were stuck talking about Attention models, SMS, XML, and the communication systems of bees (and how bee communication mirrors human interweb experience). I babbled on and on about the ease of information transfer via xml and how, with geotags, a non profit MVNO, and sms, the process by which emergency communication occurs, and broadcast between devices/ between devices and hubs, can be made not only more efficient but more adaptable to an evolving digital and cellular nation. Our cellular lives have made us the mapmakers of information, good and bad.

I know that next to drinking too much at the office party and yapping about bees is not the wisest move. nor is posting the same idea in a blog. The technology business is almost as bad as the music business, con artists everywhere, two faces for every greeting - a depressing jungle for any honesty driven idea person. Which is why it's almost more fun to give it up for free. to whore out the idea knowing that sometimes jealousy is the only real way to bring life into an idea. Now i don't know if anyone will like this idea, or want it. but i do think there is room for improvement in the way our mobile devices serve as emergency broadcast systems as well as informative emergency tools. And I don't care if anyone likes this enough to do anything with it, because (go figure) it's a not for profit idea to begin with. If anyone were to steal this and profit from it, i'd probably blog about the perversion of humanity, an expected outcome in a lazy consumerist society.

So here's the basics. its not that revolutionary. it all happened when i got a txt msg from a person on the road, who saw an unattended brush fire. they asked me to look online for a spot to report unattended brush fires. immediately i wanted the sms to have geotags so i could just enter those tags into a form and let whoever (the california hwy patrol) know of the issue, while remaining anonymous b/c i like anonymity. and privacy rights.
so...

- A state gets a non-profit MVNO for emergency communication
- all cellular/ mobile 911 calls are routed through this mvno to standard 911 emergency triage
- using the mnvno enables information to be transmitted via sms and can also utilize xml
- all transmissions to 911 will use geotags so latitude and longitude are determined
- cellular phones are also gps devices/ geotags will automatically attach to any communication within the non profit emergency mvno
- privacy rights (phone caller info) will apply - phone caller name will not be revealed
- reverse 911 messages can include photos
- photos can also be included in emergency sms messages sent from a caller to the 911 dispatch
- can also include video from video phones

as applied to the small brush fire, the witness would simply send a txt or a photo (or both) to 911. that's it. the picture/ txt message would carry all the necessary info.

there are open questions and i don't yet have answers. like......what if the 911 folks want to call back? is that an invasion of privacy? i am leaning toward a big no on that. as long as the name is withheld, what's the harm in allowing 911 triage call back a message sender to ask questions. In addition, having access to the phone number will enable police to police the system. false reports will be treated the same from a cell phone as from the land line. I'm not an expert on emergency broadcast privacy procedures, but i do believe in the ease of mailability of xml and the reality of cellular renaissance. And whether or not my non profit mvno idea (used for emergency message transmissions) makes any sense - well, i'm not sure i care. like unattended brushfires, some ideas burn hot with potential while drastically vulnerable to a change in weather.

Bermuda Triangle Of Sin

I usually spend the days before any vegas excursion dreading what i know it will entail. like.. the sounds of slot machines, spending $20 on a plate of iceburg lettuce, boob jobs gone wildly wrong, and the world's slowest, most unthrilling monorail.

Thanks to a weird 6 month ad campaign 5 years ago (which was quickly abandoned by the city), hundreds of families seem to think vegas is a great place for kids (who are you people, and why do you still bring your kids?). I don't have kids, but really, the absurdity of one's choice to introduce their offspring to a seizure-driven casino environment, which boasts the 3rd highest murder rate in the country is. . .well, could you people just go stay at circus circus and keep your kids out of the MGM? that'd be great, thanks.

That said, thousands of the rest of us flock to vegas to enroll in the Sin City plan. Until the moment my flight touches down, I never allow myself to consider vegas a desirable vacation spot, it's more of a place to engage in activities that would otherwise be considered unamerican by any of the blue states. In vegas one can visit the Bunny Ranch, the hoover dam, take a full margarita into a cab and walk around with what the rest of america calls "open container," light their car on fire in the desert for some extra insurance money, or go to a show of famous-person impersonators.

Why Waste Time Admitting to Love Vegas...?
Because in vegas there is no time. so no time is wasted. There isn't really any proof that it even exists. Las Vegas is an interstitial strip of consumer driven residue, transcending time and space somewhere between death valley and boulder, co.

Las Vegas doesn't exist, which is a succesful culmination of it's history (built on Meyer Lansky's relationships with the mob, and more recently, Wynn's junk bonds), the air (nuclear testing site for 11 years), it's structure (no clocks, insulated environments/ closed systems), and most brilliantly, the general marketing of the city (what happens in vegas stays in vegas). It does? that's great! it means i was never really there.

Apparently i I went to vegas this weekend with a couple of old friends. Old college roommates. We share memories but know exactly how to make more everytime we are together. So It wasn't vegas, vegas doesn't exist. The environment and marketing of Vegas allowed us to indulge without the chains of everyday life. Even tho it never happened. And no, i don't have any stories (for you) about what did or didn't happen when we were or weren't there. All i can say is, i think i was at Studio 54, but not the real Studio 54 - the MGM Grand version of Studio 54. which means i was never really at Studio 54 at all. I think i saw diana ross, but not diana ross as she exists now - i saw a transvestyte pretending to be diana ross at the imitation version of studio 54. But as far as vegas is concerned, i was at studio 54, partying with one of the supremes.

Further proving that Las Vegas doesn't actually exist is this bizarre end result: my friends and i spent an entire day at the pool - well, 4 hours of our day - in the hot sun, no clouds, no spf anything (sorry mom). and none of us were sunburned.

let's review. I life in the pacific northwest and work at a startup. I'm NEVER sunbathing. but in vegas, i took these pasty legs to the pool and had myself a poolside massage, a mango margarita or two or more, and snubbed off dumb boys, thereby encouraging them to follow me around like little cabana helper monkeys desperate for a pat on the head. And what happened to these pasty legs? nothing. no burn. If it was just me, i'd propose that it's me who doesn't exist, and not las vegas. but it also happened to my other friends. 4 hours, during peak sun hours, and we didn't burn. we didn't fry. I'm convinced we were never really outdoors. and since what happens in vegas stays there, i'll never really know. It's a closed system. It's a Thomas Pynchon novel waiting to happen. It's the next set for ABC's "lost" - it's las vegas on the map. But really, it's the bermuda triangle of sin.

America needs las vegas b/c without it we are wholly oppressed by our own regulation of vices. When visiting vegas we are liberated, and the chamber of commerce allows us to liberate ourselves without consequence. What happens in a closed system, stays in a closed system. We need vegas to remind us of how free or chained we want to be - americans need 3 days without expectations as a desirable outlet in a nation built on routine. We want to feel free to throw away as much money as spend "wisely." We need to believe that causal sex is common and emotions are just side effects. With Las Vegas, we can pretend. And when we go home to our boob tubes, and we see the ad campaign, we are reminded that indeed we can be redeemed for sin - without ever getting a sunburn.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Some of the world's biggest record labels sued the makers of the file-sharing program LimeWire on Friday, saying the software allows users to download music without paying for it. The complaint, filed in Manhattan federal court, is the latest in a string of lawsuits the music industry has filed in an attempt to curb Internet piracy. That effort was bolstered last year when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that content companies can take legal action against technology firms that encourage copyright infringement. Record labels owned by the world's four major music companies -- Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI Group Plc (EMI.L), and Warner Music Group Corp (WMG.N) -- brought the lawsuit against New York-based Lime Wire LLC. The suit seeks $150,000 in damages for every song "willfully infringed" by LimeWire. It also names LimeWire parent Lime Group LLC as well as chief executive Mark Gorton and chief operating officer Greg Bildson as defendants.
LimeWire officials could not be reached for comment. In the complaint, the record companies accuse LimeWire of profiting from illicit downloads of their music, saying "the scope of infringement is massive." LimeWire and its executives "have had a direct financial interest in, and derived substantial benefit from, the infringement of plaintiffs' copyrighted sound recordings," the complaint said. In a statement, industry trade group the Recording Industry Association of America said that "despite numerous efforts to engage LimeWire, the site's corporate owners have shown insufficient interest in developing a legal business model."
Last month, one of the world's best known file-sharing networks, Kazaa, agreed to pay more than $100 million and commit to going legitimate to settle two lawsuits brought by the movie and music industries. Kazaa had emerged as the dominant file-sharing network after recording industry lawsuits brought about the collapse of the original Napster in 2001. Napster has since reemerged as a paid service. In recent years, illicit file-sharing networks have lost ground as legitimate music services like Apple Computer Inc 's (AAPL.O) iTunes gained popularity.
Further solidifying the case for legitimate music services was last year's precedent-setting ruling by the United States' top court, which stated that because "peer to peer" company Grokster's intent was to encourage copyright infringement, it could be held liable for the music traded on its network.

I might annoy a few people and write a nice piece on how the indie sector of the music business got a raw deal here. I have nothing less than praise for gnomedex, filtered only by the glaring misrepresentation of the opportunity New Media affords indie industry, especially music. With two men representing the music business, and only 2 models (direct deals and major labels) (no indie label representation at all) - it's time for a little estrogen, boys. LISTENUP CHRIS: The music business is already a boys club. Must we merge that old world mentality with the new medium we are in the midst of building?

The New Black Mountain Poets: Asheville meets SF. . . Again

Residents of the mission district in san francisco are a most glorious extension of the black mountain poets. With all the flickr tagging, vloggerconning, moblogging, mobilcasting, and digital logging - the internet is more than the new library or new mapping system, it is a medium by which neighborhood characteristics are once again brought to light in the shadow of real-life Wal Mart domination. Digital media embraces the subjective and turns each agent into an artist, decomposing and re-recomposing itself as a palette. The mission district and the digital media artists (documentarians, really) who are congregating within it, are leading the movement - our neighborhood is our palette, "web2.0" is our tool, and the ways we manipulate each tool is yet another form of the art.

Take, for example, the sidewalks stencils as seen in flickr group sidewalk aphorisms.

The Mission is easily reconstituted as new artforms and creating a movement in digital media by simply existing . . . now the rest of the world is quickly experiencing the sidewalks & graffiti in the mission in multi tiered formats.

Photography recreates the stencils, tools on the web enable the syndication and therefore the experience. video puts it to motion. general freak factor in sf helps make it wonderful. Perhaps one or two tourists are walking around the mission, right now, looking for the sidewalk stencils they heard about/ saw on the internet. The mission is a digital palimpsest, experienced in layers and documented with indelible ferocity, in multiple mediums - written by The New Black Mountain Poets. That's us.

Teens arrested for graffiti after images posted on MySpace

WASHOUGAL, Wash. -- It didn't take long for police to arrest a couple of brothers in a rash of graffiti after images of the scrawling appeared on the Internet with boastful remarks, some showing the apparent perpetrators.

The 13 colorful scrawlings appeared in March and April on business walls, fences, a billboard and bridges in this town of about 10,000 east of Portland, Ore. Last week Officer Tom Davis made posters offering a $150 reward for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible and hung them at Jemtegaard Middle School and Washougal High School.

Within two hours, police were contacted by two witnesses who directed investigators to MySpace.com, a popular Web site with teenagers, Sgt. Kim Yamashita said Wednesday.

"In some of the pictures they actually posed with the graffiti," Yamashita said. "That makes it a little easier."

Police obtained a warrant, searched the home of the brothers, ages 16 and 13, and seized paint, pens and markers, as well as a CD with more images of the graffiti.

The older brother was arrested Wednesday. The younger, 13, was arrested Sunday and was being held for investigation of first-degree malicious mischief and intimidating a witness.

Yamashita said the younger boy threatened to beat up someone he believed had informed on him.

Police pegged the cost of painting over the graffiti at $2,375.

As Stern settles into his Sirius Satellite Radio gig, questions continue to
focus on just how successful the move was. Stern is always surrounded by
dour forecasts, probably fueled by his less-than-savory brand of chit-chat
and penchant for controversy. But what is the current snapshot actually
saying? After about three months on the job, the numbers seem satisfactory,
but not great. On the low end, estimates peg the number of Stern converts at
one million, and towards two million on the high-end.

So was the 5-year, $500 million deal worth it? It is absolutely too early to
tell, though it already appears that the deal is above water. Isolating a
pure Stern convert is difficult, especially with so much selection on the
Sirius dial, though the overall lift seems substantial. A detailed look at
the Sirius accounting rolls would be illuminating, though a
back-of-the-envelope analysis sheds some light. Assuming a low-end, one
million conversion rate, a $12.95 monthly charge nets a yearly figure of
$155.4 million (assuming no churn). Multiplied by five years, the figure
jumps to $777 million, also assuming zero churn.

Incidentally, Sirius recently clarified that stock payouts are part of the
larger, $500 million estimate. "In October 2004 we disclosed that the
aggregate fixed obligations under our agreement with Stern would be
approximately $100 million per year commencing in 2006," the most recent
Sirius 10-K report states. "The 34,375,000 shares issued in January 2006 for
the benefit of Howard Stern and Don Buchwald, his agent, were valued in
October 2004 at approximately $110 million and were included as part of the
aggregate fixed obligations under the agreement. At issuance, these shares
were valued at approximately $225 million, which will be recorded to equity
granted to third parties and employees expense in the first quarter of
2006." Anyway, lifting above the weeds of this breakdown, it appears that
the deal is already paying off.

There is also a major branding benefit that Sirius receives, an effect that
continues thanks to newspapers like the New York Post. The effects seem
substantial. At this point last year, Sirius was nearing 1.5 million
subscribers, a number that has recently crossed 4 million. Regardless of how
many pure Stern converts there are, the acquisition raised the Sirius brand
tremendously, and the payoff has affected automobile executives and
consumers alike. Already, the company has a faster rate of subscriber
addition than XM Satellite Radio, which boasts 6.5 million subscribers. And
a monumental achievement could occur in the near future if Sirius manages to
surpass its longtime rival.

Meanwhile, the larger Sirius financial picture is still a bit rough on the
stomach. Red ink is heavy, and losses could top $1 billion this year, on
estimated revenues of $600 million. That has many lining up against the
format, predicting a major sinkhole of cash as competing formats gain
strength. For executives like Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin, that can be a bit
scary, though ultimately the gamble is what keeps things exciting. Whether
the picture heads into the black during 2007, as Karmazin predicts, is
speculative, though so far it appears that Stern is helping the overall
effort - and maybe saving it.

i hit send/receive and received the sxsw daily chord today, as i do most days. it lands in my inbox, and i usually mock the headlines with DJ Vivek - both of us expressing wonder at why we bother to subscribe. The news from Daily Chord is almost certain to be a regurgitated version of recycled stories most of us already know. The Daily Chord is the last to report on everything. I mean really, daily chord, we all knew about Nikki Sudden (RIP) by 10am yesterday morning. Every day is a slow news day for the daily chord. but it's not just because their version of news is really a lesson in stating the obvious.

Dear Daily Chord Editorial staff - if there is one,

Stop linking to articles from papers which require online subscriptions. Those days are over, and while we, the people of the digital & independent music industry, realize that the newspaper companies have yet to demonstrate any comprehension of RSS, it's really fucking annoying to click on a link which takes me to a registration page. Punish these papers, even if they are major papers, for their ignorance. Pull the article straight from the AP from whence it came. Create your own daily chord or just stop boasting any leads in music industry news. Billboard is dead for a reason. Demonstrate that you have learned at least a little something from the interactive part of sxsw. Tell me something I don't already know, throw me a bone. How about leaking a track or two? With great power comes great responsibility. This doesn't stop at spiderman. Interactive media doesn't have any obligation to submit to a 9th grade reading level. Leave that to traditional press, they've gotten so good at it. Take my advice, daily chord, i'm trying to help you live through this transitory time in digital media. don't bury yourself where pollstar went to die. I'd hate to see it happen when you've come so far. Challenge yourself, daily chord, to tell me something i don't know, and give it to me in a logical form. Graduate to web 2.0 before 8.0 creeps up on you like so much weed in the valley.

Authorities: Woman Was Trying To Go To Festival

AUSTIN, Tx. -- A Chicago woman accused of stowing away on a plane to attend the South by Southwest Festival faces a federal charge.

Catherine "Cat" Chow, a 33-year-old artist, was on the standby list for a flight from St. Louis to Austin, booked through American Airlines. When she found out the flight was full, Chow snuck past gate agents, boarded the plane and hid in the bathroom, authorities said.

When a passenger knocked on the bathroom door, Chow took the man's seat. When his wife made her move, she took another seat.

After she was forced to move again, a flight attendant discovered her, court documents said.

An agent with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force was called to the airport. Airport police also were waiting for Chow when the plane landed.

Chow told authorities she "knew what she did was wrong, but wanted to meet with her friends in Austin . . . to participate in the South by Southwest activities," documents said.

Airport police said they found marijuana and six antidepressant tablets without a prescription label.

Chow was charged with boarding an airplane without permission, a federal crime, and two state misdemeanors, possession of marijuana and possession of a dangerous drug.

Chow was being held in the Travis County jail on a $3,000 bail.

it's time to review sxsw and report on music, as well as the self inflating conversations overheard amongst overpaid publishers and pony tailed wannabes. But before i can even get that far, and list out the bands who blew me away, thanking the good friends i saw and the new ones i made, there's a bit of a personal tale to tell. After ten days of 8am - 3+ am conferencing, socializing, business-doing over beats and hopping skipping jumping across the only city in texas I ever hope to visit once a year, I literally....collapsed. I was so close to getting home. Really, i was. In fact, the big beautiful probably-gay-metrosexual- black man in sunglasses (at the crack of dawn), wearing his united airline wings and flexed arms, had just handed me my boarding pass. When next i knew, i was on the pavement. at curbside. I was the curbside check in, and i was checked out. Passed out.

from what i'm told, there was loose banter from me, begging the ems crew to wheel me to the gate, to get me home. And they say i kept trying to get up and walk, collapsing each time. I guess my legs just couldn't go. I also remember my fingers tingling, and of course i banged my left knee when i fell (that's for another blog.) The story goes that my eyes rolled back, i collapsed on the ground and once i "came to" (and i saw a sea of strangers looking at me from above) i tried to crawl away. it was instinct. to get the eff away and to keep moving. I guess i'm glad that's my instinct. hell of way to find it out, though.

ever had a bag of fluids pumping into your veins somewhere in bush's flat ass state? i found myself dehydrated, recovering from a fainting spell and very very confused in texas the day after sxsw reached it's conclusion.

I had a life changing experience, and after spending an extra night (after that whole conference!) in texas (somewhere outside of austin) because my body decided it was time to stop - i learned a few things. I learned i have wonderful friends. I learned that it's scary to be alone but i can still get by. and i learned that even when i'm glad to walk away relatively unscathed from any situation, i'm missing some key elements in my life. I spend most days going between my apartment, the gym, and my office. I've only actually toured San Francisco twice since i moved here. All i do is work, and i don't do it well enough by my own standards. Work becomes more important than food, drink, relationships - it's my life and it's the life i've chosen. but maybe, just maybe it's time for a vacation.

I flew to denver today first, then to SF. The flight from denver was absolutely horrid. the screaming child behind me was propped up in a car seat by his mother, who had rigged it just enough so my seat could not recline. there was a snowstorm in denver, so we were delayed, and had one of the bumpiest ascents i've ever experienced. and when i thought we were going down, i scared even myself. I unhooked my seatbelt. never hooked it back, not even before landing. I mean, i had just collapsed the night before in the middle of texas. I was feeling a little invincible, kind of angry about that damn child car seat, and a little bit special. when some might wonder why they ought to tempt fate, i wondered why not.

and then, when i realized that my unlatched seatbelt was doing nothing other than....being unlatched...there was a conference on which to reflect.

I learned more at sxsw than could ever be relayed in a blog. and yes, when i woke up in the hospital my 3rd thought was "fuck i hope nobody got a picture of that and flickr'd it" - but ultimately the information i walked away with is almost too large. which is really the point, isn't it? With all these ideas, we are only limited by the platforms and products by which we convey them. And the space is multi tiered. Best interactive panel? "online places in offline spaces" - there wasn't even room to sit on the floor.

And i learned more about the number of people out there who want to harvest ideas off of others. they are everywhere. the harvesters. there are doers, there are the assholes, the assholes with money, there are the assholes with money who pretend they're from the ghetto, and then there is the music business. I take pride in sticking with the good guys, who rely on the culmination of ideas. And it was good to engage in higher learning with cohorts for whom i have great love and respect.

by the end of the week, the omni cleaning staff was sticking notes under our doors, begging us to let them clean the room. and yes, someone (not one of us) pulled a fire alarm at the omni. bright and early at 11am. which was good, because we forgot to set our alarm.

Put it this way, if you missed sxsw this year - you missed one of the most unique South By Southwests to date. There is a grand disconnect in the conference - it was odd to see so many leave after interactive who should have been sitting on music panels, and vice versa. the convergence is here, and this is the first time i've observed it as so blatantly obvious.

what a sight it was, with bloggers in the street, sitting on sidewalks, logging rock star sightings. It was a highly interactive SxSW music festival, just a few days too late for the interactive gang to be there. Next year should prove even more productive, as the two conferences have finally unified.

The theme this year (during music) was the female. Yes, it's true. it started with Sleater-Kinney who closed the film festival, and went on - there were female drummers with power arms and voluptuous swings all over. Some say it's the year of the rat, i offer this, the year of the hot female musician.

surprise flaming lips show...peaches joined for the encore - to sing "war pigs" - and the new FLips songs sound stunning live. other shows to kick my ass after a long day of the most crowded day party in austin (!!! the ioda party!!!) were: the gris gris, the black angels, and the new pornographers (who have gotten tighter since their european tour). there's a lot more blogging to be done but for now it's all about quick missives, flickr photos, showering and off to the next event with a stack of business cards and a PDA. Sleep is not really an option. Another long day and night and morning ahead, with plans to see eagles of death metal, burning brides, rogue wave, masonic, kid millionaire, dr. dog, deadboy & the elephantmen, the apes, the twilight singers, peaches dj set, vhs or beta, spoon, the capes, dressy bessy, spinto band, film school, oranger, voxtrot, mixmaster mike, goldfrapp, secret machines, did i mention ad-roc and the boys are here and i'll see them after hours? all this taking place while business gets done, and thensome. If you've never been to sxsw, for business or pleasure, it's meaningful to note that all these shows take place at parties and showcases sponsored by entities such as high times, levi's, emusic, filter, tagworld, vice, fader, iheartcomix...and....i love what i do for a living. and quite frankly, the lips rendition of yoshimi was one of the best i've heard in a while, maybe it was the sound - or the intimate setting. i love what i do for a living....it may look easy, but this week was earned by many and it's all business as much as it is heavenly. do you love what you do? more reports from sxsw to come. more than likely after the fact.

i was all set to blog about sxsw...about the fact that i sat in the 13th row on the plane (seat C!) and am now on the 13th floor of the omni, albeit the club level, with his and her robes in the closet, high ceilings & mints on my pillow - i was going to blog about skipping out on the blogher party because i really need just one night without parties, (the next 9 nights are stacked) - but then this video came my way. the pic of me and my ibook was going to go up here as my first sxsw hotel room shot - but since i'm felling like a jewish girl gone wild, i decided to link it with this video, which i keep watching over and over..laughing each time.....i like when she scrubs the carpet.

Bogus Picture Rules at SxSW and the Yari Wristband Overhaul

it was a game, but now it's personal. either the rules have changed or eyes are not mandatory. when i went to re-upload my original mug, i received a note that said the uploading process has ended "we have plenty of cameras at badge pick up."

there's also a curious issue for wristband people. For the first year, wristbands "sold out." But a drunk monkey with a marketing job at a box company could figure this one out:

people who didn't purchase their wristbands and just found out they are sold out have an option. kind of. They have to use the sxsw sms system (sponsored by yari) to get wristbands. First, a person has to sign up, enter their number, receive a confirmation code, and then they will receive a text message - on tuesday - stating where and when the wristbands go on sale. Til then, nobody knows how many of the wristbands will be for sale, where they are sold, or what time on tuesday. Nice job, yari. But it's easy to say that having a badge (pic or no pic) - if i was bankin on a wristband i might have a different opinion of yari and the sxsw wristband overhaul. It's creative, but demand for wristbands is not lacking. While it's neat, it's pointless. It's hard enough for people to get into shows, now it's a pain for them to get wristbands? come on sxsw.

day one at Podcast Hotel was quite the success. only thing i keep forgetting to do is eat a meal. I don't recall a meal at all yesterday (got too busy) so the last time i ate was over a day ago, not including the $5 cookie i ate last night in my hotel room. do they have restaurants in seattle? i'm hoping to find out before i take off tomorrow.
meanwhile, it's back to business...

Hungover In Seattle

Hello from Seattle and Podcast Hotel. For my less 'cast savvy friends - the podcast hotel is not an actual hotel. The actual hotel where I am staying thinks it's in New York, but in NYC it wouldn't be nearly this cool or have any of these ammenities. I'll explain - with a list. When i woke up this morning, these were my thoughts, in this exact order:

1) why are the lights on
2) this down comforter is nice
3) so are these down pillows
4) why am i sleeping diagonal
5) where is fletch
6) did i really drink beer or was that cider?
7) oh shit, who did i call and what did i say
8) what did i say and who did i call
9) wow this is nice, there are 8 down pillows on this phat bed
10) do i have to be somewhere at 8am?
11) what did i say and who did i call
12) can't i just stay in bed?
13) Let's have a cd listening party in second life

Now i am off to start the day, already running late at 7am. This event is already proving to jar my thoughts beyond the mostly trite list above. Last night ER told me his son recognizes his avatar as "cartoon daddy." I can't get this out of my head. the neurobiological & cognitive implications - a dissertation waiting to happen.

And now i'm off to blow off any memories of my drunken self and hang with more of the 'sphere i love so dear.
